DIY & Self Build Conservatories
-----------------------------------

DIY or Self-Build conservatories can provide you with a rewarding and cost effective solution to adding a conservatory to your home. These days you can purchase a DIY conservatory from almost anywhere including the Internet.

It is well worth considering however that such a project, particularly for the ones out there with little or no DIY knowledge that this task will ask a great deal of you. With this in mind be sure to do plenty of research. Collect information on the materials available to you, the different between styles and design features (see our Conservatory Design page), insulation techniques etc.

Additionally you need to be responsible for finding out about Planning Permission and Building Regulations before you even begin to look at buying. It is recommended that you contact your local council regarding these issues.

Regarding materials, the choice between opting for a hardwood conservatory or a PVCu conservatory is a personal one. Again take a look at our ‘Conservatory Design’ page for the advantages of these two materials.

Two of the most important factors will be insulation and ventilation, two opposing factors but equally as important to your comfort.

Insulation is achieved by the use of high quality glass. Glass such as Low E and Pilkington K glass includes a metal coating that allows through short-wave radiation, like sunlight and reflects long-wave radiation such as heat from indoor fires and radiators.

Regarding ventilation there are several ventilation systems to keep your conservatory at a comfortable temperature such as roof vents, ceiling fans, extractor units and air exchange systems. Again the important thing here is to do plenty of research.
